No. A personal Instagram account can't send automatic replies. Instagram's own auto-reply tools (FAQs, Meta Business Suite automations) and every tool built on Instagram's official API work only with a Professional account, either Creator or Business. Meta charges nothing to switch, and you can switch back anytime.
Why personal accounts can't auto reply
Meta's developer documentation says it plainly: to use Instagram's APIs, "your app users must have an Instagram professional account", which "can represent a business or creator". Every legitimate auto-reply tool connects through those APIs, so none of them can work on a personal account.
Instagram's built-in options have the same limit. Automatic answers to frequently asked questions in the Instagram app are "only available for business and creator accounts", and Meta Business Suite's inbox automations are for Instagram business accounts.
Any app that offers auto replies on a personal account has to log in as you with your password. Instagram's terms ban giving your login to third-party apps and accessing Instagram "in an automated way without our express permission", and Instagram warns that such apps "can gain complete access to your account". That's how accounts get restricted.
What changes when you switch to a Professional account
| Personal | Creator | Business | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto replies and DM automation | No | Yes | Yes |
| Insights (reach, followers, plays) | No | Yes | Yes |
| Can be private | Yes | No | No |
Things to know before you switch:
- A private account becomes public, and pending follow requests are accepted automatically.
- Your posts, followers and username stay the same.
- You can switch back to personal anytime.
Creator or Business? Creator suits people (influencers, coaches, artists); Business suits brands and shops. Both work with auto replies and automation tools.
How to switch
In the Instagram app: open your profile, tap the ☰ menu, go to Account type and tools, and tap Switch to professional account. Pick a category, choose Creator or Business, and finish the steps. (Menu names can differ slightly between app versions.)
Setting up auto replies after you switch
You have three options, from simplest to most capable.
1. Instagram's FAQs (free, built in)
In the Instagram app: Messages → ⋯ → Tools → Frequently asked questions, then turn on "Show Questions". You can add up to 4 questions, each with an automatic answer. People see them when they open a chat with you. Their messages land in your Requests, so check there.
2. Meta Business Suite automations (free, desktop)
In Meta Business Suite on a computer: Inbox → Automations. You'll find an instant reply for first messages, an away message, frequently asked questions and custom keyword replies. Keyword replies match exactly and go out after 15 minutes if you haven't answered yourself.
3. A comment-to-DM tool
If you want a DM to go out the moment someone comments a keyword like "LINK" on your reel, with a public reply under their comment and a link in the message, use a tool on Instagram's official API, such as Blupi. You connect with "Log in with Instagram", so no password is shared.

The rules every auto reply follows
Even on a Professional account, Instagram limits what any tool can send:
- Only people who wrote first. You can reply to someone who commented or messaged you, not cold-DM strangers.
- 24 hours. A normal reply must go out within 24 hours of the person's last message.
- One DM per comment. A comment can trigger one private reply, within 7 days. The conversation continues only if they reply.
- No new-follower trigger. Instagram's public API has no event for new followers.
Questions
Does switching to a Creator account cost anything?
No. Meta doesn't charge for switching, and you can switch back anytime.
Will I lose followers if I switch?
No. Your followers, posts and username stay the same. The one visible change is that a private account becomes public.
Can a private account use auto replies?
No. Professional accounts can't be private, so you'd need to make the account public by switching.
Is there a way to auto reply on a personal account without switching?
Not safely. The only way is an app that logs in with your password, which breaks Instagram's terms and puts the account at risk.
